Use Case – Tennis

Imagine you are a tennis player preparing for an upcoming tournament in April. In this use case, self-awareness is knowing your tennis strengths and weaknesses, the ability to self-reflect on your game daily, in order to improve and have a great run on the tournament.
Responsibility, on the other hand, is basically being able to take ownership of your game at every single point in time and adjust it according to your opponents’ strengths and weaknesses, varying playing conditions (e.g. wind, humidity etc.) and your overall strategy. This is crucial, because your actual performance on the tournament will decide how good your run will be.
The Role of Self-Awareness and Responsibility
The Role of Self-Awareness and Responsibility
We all had matches in the past when we felt in control and self-aware, but also took responsibility for our game to win the match. But we had other matches when nothing seemed to work, we blamed everything and everyone except for ourselves, we lacked the self-awareness, we didn’t really take responsibility and eventually lost the match. Those are two extremes but you get the idea.
Developing Skills with Self-Awareness and Responsibility
Prolonged concentration, self-regulation of emotions, flexibility, adjusting the game, self-belief in important points are all skills that a player preparing for a tournament can work on when practicing, complementing their technical expertise and shot-making abilities. But without self-awareness and responsibility, those skills will not be effectively monitored and improved upon.
Relevance in Careers
Therefore, in tennis, as with our careers, self-awareness and responsibility are essential for improving and eventually reaching success. Knowing ourselves and being able to take ownership for our actions, is essential to overcome obstacles that hold us back from achieving our goals and tapping into our true potential.
The Role of a Coach
A coach can help increase your awareness and keep you accountable, but in the end, it is the coachee’s will to take responsibility of their actions and do their best in every coaching session that will make all the difference in how fast the desired results & success will come.
